Landscapes of Light - Light Aurora

Each work in Landscapes of Light is an original, hand-crafted cyanotype, individually printed on cotton-rich fabric and stretched over a deep wooden frame. Rather than treating cyanotype as a traditional photographic process, these works push the historic cameraless technique beyond its conventional limits through an extended exposure of up to three days, producing an extraordinary depth of tone and subtle variations that cannot be replicated.
Process of this work
The light-sensitive chemistry is hand-mixed using a modified cyanotype formula before being guided across the fabric. During exposure, the chemicals continue to shift and react to light, creating fluid passages that emerge through both deliberate intervention and the natural unpredictability of the process. No two works can ever be the same.
The flowing surfaces of this set evoke shifting atmospheres while remaining deliberately abstract. The movement recorded within each print is not simply represented—it is embedded within the work itself, formed over days as light, chemistry and time interact across the fabric.
Underlying the work is an interest in the Overview Effect—the profound shift in perspective experienced by astronauts viewing Earth from space. This phenomenon inspires a way of thinking about landscape that extends beyond geography towards interconnected systems, atmosphere and planetary scale.

Created on cotton-rich fabric and stretched over a deep frame, the work continues around the edges, resisting a fixed boundary. The landscape continues beyond what is visible, suggesting that the energies and processes shaping our world exist far beyond the limits of the picture plane. The result is an invitation to reflect not only on the beauty of natural phenomena, but also on our place within them.
